Writer's pictureImagine a Bird

At 53, trying to make friends in a new town (poem)

Ekphrastic poem in response to Anthony Rigano’s hand-developed film photograph from a Calumet 4x5 camera.

Please don’t look past me

Come over here, reach out and

Peel me off like tart fruit leather from

Alarmingly loud cellophane

Or take in my awkward best intentions

as a sticker for a child:

“Awesome job!”

“Everything will be ok”

“This is tough but so am I”

Depth as a mood ring

One person’s intriguingly layered

is another’s scowling shallow

But don’t think these things as you chew.

Taste slowly.

Digest nutrients.

Spit out any bones.
